In this tutorial, I'll show you how to case bind a hardcover book.
From my experience in bookbinding, I've found there are many variations of case binding methods. None are necessarily better than the other, they are just slightly different and up to your personal preference. What I show in this tutorial is what has worked for me. You are welcome to make your own variations based on my tutorial to suite your own preference :)
Materials
• Text block (already made)
• Board
• Book cloth (paper will work too)
• PVA glue
Tools
• Pencil, ruler and cutting mat
• Bone folder and utility blade
• Scissors (or x-acto blade)
• Glue brush
• Weights (or heavy books)
• Book press (optional)
• Drafting triangle (optional)
❋ Important Tip ❋
Whatever material you use for the cover (fabric or paper), if it is really thick, you should add the width of it (ex. 2mm) to the "gap width". This will compensate for the thickness and allow the cover to still hang over the text block.
